This is FX lab, right? So let’s burn something…


Here is max (2011) scene, to look more closely:

As you can see, there is nothing special, particles following Speed by Icon gizmo and fluids is generated from those particles (particle source).


One brilliant FumeFX ability is to render different elements separately. Here is example how it looks straight from render (left) and what can be atchieved with very simple tweaking in compositing software.

METHOD B – multiple sources

But in reality fire burns in much more agressive way. Lets try a diffrerent setup.

Here is 2 FumeFX fire only examples.


Sample A – is one standart FumeFX particle source, like in above sample.

Sample B – is one simple source wich contains only temperature and particle source with only fuel and little more velocity.
* for this example purposes, burn rate and ignition temp a little bit tweaked.


So, in reality it happens like we had fuel steam and with other source we just ignite it with even more temperature. Animation below to see differencies:

      Unfortunately scene was created with 3dsmax 2011 version, you can’t open it in older application. I can only suggest you to download 3dsmax 2011 trial from autodesk website and view project by yourself.P.S. writing was done with default 3dsmax Path Constraint. Best of Luck!

    You’re video and renders seem to have alot more detail in the smoke and fire than the scene you posted. Why is that? did you actually simulate with a spacing value alot smaller than 0.4? or is this all detail added outside 3ds max?

      Posted *.max file is exactly the same. Don’t forget to simulate Wavelet too. Diferencies between renders and video can be compared in compositing screen above. I recommend to download that archive too, there is some rendered frame included. Hope that helps.

    So simulating Wavelet didnt seem to change much. Here is a render of frame 183 after everything is simulated but before any work is done in Fusion. idea why im not getting that detail?
